Easi-Speak USB Recorder {Giveaway}

Did you know there are free text to voice services available online?  I usually use Voz.me or Zamzar (if you are curious about checking them out).  It is effective for reaching auditory learners, however the voices are robotic and a bit difficult to listen to during long recordings.  The Easi-Speak USB Recorder is an amazing alternative for transferring text to voice using an AUTHENTIC voice!  Introduce your tape recorder to its’ more efficient 21st Century counterpart!

Here are just a few of the practical applications I came up with for using the Easi-Speak:

~Have students pre-record their lines for a classroom theatre production and play it back while focusing on the actions during the presentation.

~Record the instructions for your independent work stations for students to listen to on the mini microphone. They can easily re-play the track as often as they need to in making sure they understand the instructions.

~Pair children to read books at their “just write” level and allow other students who are interested in the same books to listen and follow along to their more fluent peers.

~Invite students to record a review of a book their recently finished reading.

~Record a series of count bys (2’s, 5’s, 10’s) as a practice activity.

~Practice and record different tones to make students aware of what they are able to do with their voice (whisper, shout, high voice, low voice, singing, etc.).

~Record a speech sample to share with the specialist when considering intervention for a child.

~Turn it into a fun activity for practicing kind and positive words by passing the recorder around a circle and allow each child to add the phrases that come to their minds.

~Encourage readers to record text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections.

~Share a wordless book and allow students to narrate their own story into the Easi-Speak.

This list could go on and on!!!

My own children are memorizing a passage of scripture each month.  They look forward to reciting their passage in whole once they have it down.  This month it was especially exciting for them to make a recording of their verse using the Easi-Speak microphone.  They also all love to sing along to the radio, so I have many recordings of their karaoke versions of radio favorites sung into the Easi-Speak!

In experimenting with sharing the recordings from the microphone to the computer I was thankful for the simplicity.  The Easi-Speak is a USB so it plugs directly into the side of my lap top for charging and for uploading recordings.

This technology tool is a winner for increasing classroom productivity and meeting diverse learning needs. I especially appreciate the potential for encouraging reluctant readers and public speakers, as well as inspiring creativity.  Easi-Speak is the perfect size for small hands (about 4" long) and portable.  It is incredibly easy to operate for both adults and students.  The buttons are self explanatory.  The internal chargeable battery is both effort and cost effective.

GIVEAWAY:

Interactive Projection Camera {Giveaway}

Today I would like to introduce you to the Luna Interactive Projection Camera.  This three in one tool - video camera, still camera, web cam – simplifies your classroom presentation and increases productivity.  The camera is very small and portable – no more bulky overhead needed!  The tool easily connects to either your computer or smart board.

Here are just a few of the practical applications I came up with for using the projection camera:

~Use the video feature with narration to explain how to use manipulatives in math and science center activities.

~Project the pictures for your read aloud book so that no one on the carpet can complain about not being able to see ;)

~Take still shots of student writing samples to include in a digital portfolio.

~Project various blank charts and graphs from the computer to the board where the class can work together to fill them in with information corresponding with the lesson content.

~Share a nonfiction text from a book and search together for key non fiction features and/or details vs. main ideas.

~Use the web cam feature to engage the entire class in a Skype conversation with a career professional whose job description weaves in with your curriculum and/or an author sharing tips on quality writing.

I have to say, I even used the camera at home to project one of my recipes onto my laptop screen. As I was cooking I could walk away from the recipe and still see it projected.  I never had to touch it with my sticky ingredient fingers.

In experimenting with sharing lesson materials under the camera I discovered that jerky movements projected a bit fuzzy, but with smooth movements and the focus tool it was easy to adjust the clarity of still images.

I think this technology tool is incredibly affordable for all that it is capable of doing. I was really impressed with how easy the camera was to set up and use.  I put off getting started with it at first because I thought I would need to read through a manual to figure out all the features, but actually it is self explanatory once the cd is loaded in the computer.  There is a helpful button on the camera to project light on dark images that need to be shared clearly. Luna does not require any batteries, which eliminates a maintenance frustration. This is certainly a useful tool for a busy teacher who is looking for fun and effective ways to enhance instruction!

More Than Just Math: Financial Literacy (with a Flip Camera Giveaway)

Welcome! New to ABC and 123? Please check out our FAQ in the sidebar.

Updated 7/23: Thank you to each of you who contributed to our conversation here.  What a lot of interesting thoughts on money.  Congratulations to Shelley - comment #36, chosen by Random.org - the winner of the Flip camera giveaway.

Today we are talking about money. money. money. We hope you enjoy some clever suggestions from our readers, a lively discussion about financial literacy, and a neat great giveaway opportunity!
Rachelle offers a free Coin Counting game with spinner in her math feature: It All Adds Up.

Coin Dominos, like these from Green Olives and Ham, are an interesting way to learn to identify coins and their values.
Superheroes and Princesses played the game Trading Coins inspired by The Penny Pot.
Chronicles of an Infant Bibliophile  uses board games to teach concepts of money such as counting bills and making bids.

My Paper Pony used state quarters to inspire an interest in US geography and to create some fun etchings. The pdf for this activity is available for free in her post.

Quirky Momma has a suggestion for shining up your coins before counting them.

The Adventures of Bear shared a play based way of learning about and using money.
They also did activities using several different  books about money.

As a classroom teacher it may be enough to teach kids to identify coins and count money.  However, as parents we must go a step further and intentionally teach them concepts of managing their money as well as how to make wise desicions with their financial resources.

In collaboration with Disney, T. Rowe Price has created The Great Piggy Bank Adventure®  as a valuable teaching resource for parents to use when talking to their children about saving and spending wisely.  The Great Piggy Bank Adventure will offer lessons on four key financial themes: setting goals, saving and spending smartly, staying ahead of inflation, and diversifying your investments. They believe these lessons are more important than ever and desire to guide parents as they talk to their kids about good financial habits.

As parents and educators we would love to join the discussion on best practices for teaching financial literacy.  In the comment section of this post we are hoping to facilitate a valuable conversation about our families, our money, and how we are preparing our children to manage finances.

Here are some questions for your consideration:

~Do you think it’s appropriate to discuss your family’s financial situation with your kids?

~If so, at what age should you talk to them about family finances?

~Was the topic of money “taboo” in your family growing up?

~If so, how have you overcome that “taboo” with your kids?

~At what age do you start introducing financial concepts such as saving and spending or inflation with your kids?

~What advice would you give to other parents trying to use every day moments to teach their kids about the importance of saving and spending wisely?

These are questions every parent deals with and the answers are important because they can determine how your child learns about key financial concepts that will impact their lives.
To encourage your participaiton in this discussion we are excited to offer a Disney Piggy Bank Adventure branded Flip camera giveaway.  Each answer, reaction, or new question asked on topic that is left in the comment section between now and Tuesday July 19th will be counted as an entry into the giveaway.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Disclosure: The Great Piggy Bank Adventure-branded Flip camera and a gift card for this post's author have been provided courtesy of T. Rowe Price. T. Rowe Price is not involved in or responsible for the outcome of this giveaway.  A specific comment is not required for entry into the Flip camera giveaway.  If you would prefer not to comment email us to be entered.  A winner will be selected from all entries after 10 pm est on July 19th, using random.org.

Tap Into Your Talents with a Tangled Giveaway

Updated 4/2: Congratulations to Commenter #8, as chosen by Random.org. Jade =) said... "Encouraging kids in their talents means you have to give them some room to figure out what they enjoy and are good at. I know a lot of parents, myself included at times, have tried to push their kids to do hobbies or sports they (the parents) want them to do, and the kids rebel. You have to let the kids figure it out for the most part, that way they'll really be into it. Then help them with it, root for 'em, find ways for them to showcase their skills." March 23, 2011 9:09 PM UPDATED 3/24: The comments being left on this post are so thoughtful and inspiring. We appreciate it! In fact, the movie promoters are so impressed with all of you that they would like to upgrade the prize to a Blu-Ray Combo Pack, instead of just the DVD. In addition, we would love to build a post (or series of posts) around your comments on encouraging talents in young children. It would be fantastic if you would submit pictures of your talented children in action. It would also be awesome if you would send us pictures and/or post to your blog and send us the link of your family discovering their hidden talents with the cooking, crafting, hair styling projects and more found in the Rapunzel widget! Thanks & HAVE FUN!!! As parents, and educators, we often recognize amazing talents in our children that they may not yet be tapping in to. In the newest Disney movie, Tangled, Rapunzel's overprotective mother, Gothel, unfortunately doesn't recognize all that Rapunzel is capable of. Instead she hides her away in a tower where Rapunzel is left to dream of discovering all the possiblity the world holds. It isn't until a silly drifter, Flynn Ryder, stumbles into her life and takes her on an adventure that ultimately leads her to discovering the strength she never knew, that Rapunzel recognized her amazing talents. What can we do to encourage the talents in our kids? How do you help your students realize their potential? Do you have a new found talent? Leave a comment, answering one (or all) of these questions, from now until April 1st for your chance to WIN a Tangled prize package from Disney! Your package will include the Tangled DVD to be released on March 29th and a t-shirt or beanie baby plush of one of the movie characters! While you wait for this fun DVD release and for our winner announcment, enjoy the many features found in the promotional widget below. Your children will love following along as Rapunzel helps them discover their own hidden talents. Personally, I enjoyed the tips from Claire and Glen Keane on decorating a magical room much like Rapunzel's.

The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation DVD Giveaway

Update: This giveaway is now closed. The winner is comment #4: Jen @ Big Binder .
Congratulations & enjoy the talking dogs:)

It’s the season for ‘Puppy Love!’

In this hilarious and heartwarming family DVD, The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation, Paris Hilton provides the voice talent alongside Mario Lopez - both playful pooches! She is the prim and proper poodle, Bella, interacting with the mischievous yellow Lab named Zeus.

According to the release information,

"The storyline follows the Bannister family as they head to a beautiful Rocky Mountain ski lodge for their long-awaited holiday vacation. Upon their arrival, it becomes clear that this trip will be no dog walk in the park! Obnoxious relatives and their prissy poodle Bella are staying at the house too. The other relatives want little to do with the Bannisters or Zeus despite his growing “puppy love” for the cutest new pooch in town.

Meanwhile, the hooligans who attempted to ruin the Bannister’s Christmas last year are up to their old tricks. They’ve made their way to the ski resort too – with plans to snatch a diamond necklace from a resort guest. When the necklace is mistaken for Bella’s dog collar the cantankerous crooks kidnap the pampered poodle and it’s up to Zeus to once again save the day."

Sounds "paw-fect" for a holiday themed family night!

The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation took a bow (wow) at retail stores nationwide on December 7, 2010. This is the sequel to the ABC Family original movie The Dog Who Saved Christmas. This DVD retails for $19.98. Grand Communications is offering one reader of ABC & 123 a complimentary copy this holiday season. To be entered to win leave your comment on this post. One winner will be chosen at random on Monday, December 13th (entry ends on the 12th at 12EST).

The Trip Clip: Review & Giveaway

Thank you to everyone who entered our giveaway! A winner has been chosen, congratulatiosn to Christine, #31 who said, "My kids really like word searches these days, that's what I would choose."
We are excited to tell you about a new product that recently launched! We think the way the Trip Clip keeps your kids busy and helps them learn by doing, is a great concept. It's also a nice alternative to handing them yet another electronic device. Here is a little bit about it from the developer Molly Rhoten:

I originally came up with the idea for The Trip Clip™ when I was doing the grocery shopping with my older son when he was 4. He was tough to manage in the grocery store, but I figured out that if he could “help” me shop, he wouldn’t spend so much time creating his own fun/chaos. He could recognize pictures of things we needed and cross them off the list, and he loved to feel like he was part of the process. Now that he's older, he is truly helpful in the grocery store. He knows our brands and where things are, and can get a number of things by himself while I help his younger brother who is starting with a picture list all his own.

Squeezing in learning, fostering parent-child interactions, AND keeping children occupied in a meaningful way is definitely something we can support! We got a blue Trip Clip, 4-color pen, and a gift code, so we could pick our favorite activities to print out.

Right away I was impressed by the sturdiness and the size of the Trip Clip. It's special size is approximately 6X9 inches, making it perfect for little hands to hold and use. It also fits nicely into most bags; easy to grab and go without taking up much room. My four year old has no problem handling it and can work the clip independently.I think one of her favorite parts of the Trip Clip is the neat 4-color pen that's looped on by a string and can also be attached by velcro to the top of the clip board. Clicking through the four colors keeps her pretty busy all by itself! It's also scaled down to a child-friendly size and I'm glad to see replacements are available as I can see us needing more in the future! As an FYI to keep in mind the Trip Clip also offers one free clip replacement per purchase! So if your child is touch on their things or loses it, you can get a back up! What really makes the Trip Clip special, are all the neat activities available on the website! You can purchase five for $4.95 and once you add an activity to your account you can print them out as many times as you'd want. They are perfectly size to print out two to a page, just cut in half and they are ready, quick to prep and no wasting paper. Some are even customizable, like the shopping list, so you can make one to fit what your family is shopping for each time you go!

I noticed that there are activities for a range of ages and abilities. For now, my four year old is most interested in Tic-Tac-Toe, her current favorite game so we'll be printing that out A LOT, and the Coloring Pages. I have begun to use the shopping list with her as well, the Daily Checklist and Packing Lists are both customizable and would also be age appropriate. Count on It is probably the next one we'll chose to add, because she likes to count things as we pass them on the road.

I use the picture and word versions of the activities but for older children you can choose word only. There are also more advanced choices like My Alphabet Game, in which the child is to find things that start with each letter. Crossword Puzzles work on spelling and range from very easy first-letter sounds for young kids, to much harder clue-based ones for older kids. There are Word Searches, Bingo Boards that generate a new board each time you refresh the page, so there are thousands of different possible boards you can print. The boards can be catered to a restaurant, a car trip, a plane trip, a sibling’s sporting event, and more. My favorite, Write a Story, provides a space for a hand drawn picture and room to write.

These choices mean that the Trip Clip can grow with your child and that more than one child in the family can use it, but if that's the case, you'll probably want to get each child their own Trip Clip. At $19.95 the sets make great gifts and would look cute poking out of the top of a stocking...I'm just sayin' ☺ We got our review copy very quickly, so if you order now it should come by the holidays and it's a great tool to add to your parenting arsenal any time of the year!

Giveaway!
One of our readers will win a Trip Clip set that includes a Trip Clip Clipboard, 4-color pen, and 5 Activities!

Opposite Day & A Giveaway

Update: This giveaway is now closed. The winner, chosen by Random.org, is comment #4.

I loved Freaky Friday! This sounds funny too.
November 13, 2010 1:09 PM

Enjoy!

Remember the zany FUN that filled the movie Freaky Friday - it was one of my favorites as a child. In fact, I think most kids love the idea of switching spots with their parents to feel the "thrill" of being in charge. Well, it's time for another good giggle and a little lesson in role reversal.

The new feature length film, Opposite Day, brings back the theme of KIDS RULE! This family friendly film is filled with silly adventures. The main character, 9 year old Sammy, makes a wish that kids ruled the world. You know, no more bedtime, no more rules...

As you might anticipate his wish comes true and the crazy experiment goes wildly wrong. Sammy, and his sister Carla, are left with the realization that they must be more careful what they wish for because being in charge isn't at all what they expected it to be.

The movie is likely to leave you and your children appreciating each other and your unique, and important, roles in the family.

“We’re very excited to release Opposite Day on DVD and to treat kids and families to all of its zany, high-energy fun,” said Erin Carter, Executive Director of Brand Marketing for Anchor Bay Entertainment. “The film’s terrific cast along with its laugh-out-loud storyline and imaginative adventures make this the perfect release for entertaining ‘kids’ of all ages.”

This DVD will hit retail stores next week on November 16th.

Expedition Earth Curriculum Giveaway!

This giveaway is now closed, thank you to everyone who entered and congratulations to Katie, comment #29, who said, "I follow Erica via facebook"

Today we'd normally have our regular contributors Erica from Confessions of a Homeschooler's Play to Learn feature. She's done some really wonderful posts for us, just filled with tons of great ideas for fun hands-on learning! We really appreciate all of her hard work and willingness to share her activities! Erica has so much enthusiasm for education and it's been our pleasure and privledge to have her!

Erica is one busy wife, mother, homeschooler, digital scrapbook designer, and very active with many different groups. We're happy that Erica will be continuing to be a part of ABC & 123: A Learning Cooperative! She'll just be moving to the second Monday of each month. So please be sure to join her each month!

As many of you know, Erica has a wildly popular Letter of the Week Curriculum. Both Katies have had the pleasure of reviewing it, and find it to be extremely helpful. In case you didn't know, Erica also has a second curriculum, Expedition Earth and she's has generously agreed to give a downloadable version to one of our readers!

Here is a little bit about it, from her website:
Expedition Earth: A Journey Through God’s World

Expedition Earth is a geography unit study that covers 31 countries across the world. It is designed primarily for K-3 students. I am going to do this with my prek, 1st, and 2nd graders together. I won’t expect my prek to do reports, but she should be able to learn the country names, songs, languages, pray and do all the fun crafts and recipe activities I have planned!

The curriculum has 164 pages of fun activities and even includes a Craft Supply Shopping List for each country just to make your life a little easier!

Each country comes with a Monday – Friday Lesson plan that includes mapping, country flags, ecosystems, People, animals, recipes, crafts and more!

Click here to download a sample of our Brazil Week

  • 7 Wonders of the World
  • Geographical Location
  • Science: Ecosystems Study
  • Geography Vocabulary
  • People of the Region
  • How to Pray for the Regions
  • Christmas around the world
  • Children like me
  • Science: Animals mini-books for each country
  • Science: Animal Classification Study
  • Food and recipes
  • Craft activities
  • Country Songs
  • Fun activities and games

Language study: Each country comes with a fun flashcard to help you learn how to say “hello” in the main language of the country!

Additional activities for older students: Depending on the age of your student you may want some additional challenge. I have created 5 reports that your student can complete depending on interest or skill level.

  • Country Report
  • Continent Report
  • Animal Report
  • Ecosystem Report
  • Children Like Me Report

Printable Passport: No world wide expedition would be complete without a fun souvenir for the students! Expedition Earth comes with a fun printable passport that you can use to stamp for each country visited. I suggest world flag stickers in the Resources List, however I have also included printable flags that can be glued on as well.Book Basket: I suggest visiting your local library or doing an internet search for countries that interest your child. They can use the book basket during their free reading time for a fun educational experience! There is an additional reading resource section to help with the book basket.

What We Thought of Expedition Earth:

I honestly loved it! Expedition Earth is really well thought out, very organized, well rounded and all inclusive. I kept thinking, this must have taken a really long time to put together, as I persused it.

The hyperlinks to materials listed on the weekly lesson plans are very helpful. I could see how it would be a big timesaver not have to hunt down resources, printable maps, etc. for each country while planning. I was also immediately impressed with how Erica provided not just a curriculum but also support for the educator, through the resources, which include how to organize your binder and materials and printable pages for reports.

At four years old, my daughter is too young for most of the activities, however we've been slowly making our way through some of the suggested literature for the book basket and she really likes getting a new sticker for her passport and singing the songs from the Wee Sing CD. Plus many of the crafts or supplemental activities like cooking lessons are appropriate ways for her to be introduced to the different countries.

If you are a fan of Erica's early childhood Letter of the Week curriculum, you'll will be ecstatic to have another curriculum available for you to use as your learners get older! Bottom line, Expedition Earth is well worth the price!

If you ask my very soon to be 1st grader, he will tell you that it is too early to think about going back to school. However, as parents and teachers we recognize that the time is coming very quickly and it isn't too early to start prepping our supplies, wardrobes, lesson plans, and kiddos!

Just in time for back-to-school, our friendly bendy-tailed, yellow friend is at it again. Wubbzy is staring in his newest DVD “Wubbzy Goes To School” is a perfect and simple way for families to help the youngest set get ready for the big day – for the very first time!

According to the promoters of this newest title...

Wubbzy, the cute and quirky bendy-tailed character from the hit Emmy® Award-winning Nick Jr.® preschool TV series, along with his pals Widget, Walden and Daizy, help preschoolers get ready to learn! learn! learn! with the DVD release of “Wubbzy Goes To School.” The newest collection of engaging episodes will ease children’s anxieties about heading off to school and making new friends – while they embark on wonderfully wacky adventures the Wubbzy way! Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!

The DVD includes six charming episodes that will have everyone ready to hit the books. In “Who Needs School?,” Wubbzy is nervous about going off to school for the very first time and decides he can learn all he needs to know on his own. When things don’t work out as expected and Wubbzy has no one to play with, he realizes that maybe school isn’t so bad after all. In another episode, “New Kid On The Block,” Wubbzy learns that meeting and accepting new friends can be a big! big! big! job. When Murphy, a larger-than-life new student, joins the class, Wubbzy finds that good friends can come in all shapes and sizes.

Additional episodes include: “Gotta Dance,” “Wubbzy the Star,” “You Gotta Have Art” and “Magic Tricks,” starring Wuzzleburg’s own Moo Moo the Magician! Fans will also be “wowed” with cool bonus features such as the “Meet Wubbzy’s Schoolmates” photo gallery, coloring and activity sheets and more.

Sounds fun!
“Wubbzy Goes To School” has a retail price of $16.98 and is available in stores nationwide as of August 3rd, 2010.
